Playoffs Week 2 Recap

Weather affected the 2nd round of the playoffs as half the games were postponed to Saturday afternoon or evening.  For the teams in class 4A-6A, as well as class C&B, we’re halfway there on the road to Boone Pickens Stadium.  For teams in class A-3A, they go into the quarterfinals this week.  The biggest surprises this week came in class 3A with unbeaten Metro Christian and Victory Christian each going down.

Class 6A

Union Beats Edmond North 49-7

The Redskins left no doubt in their 3rd quarterfinal match-up with Edmond North in 4 seasons.  The Redskins led 49-0 at the end of the 3rd quarter and coasted to the easy win.  The Redskins now move on to face Broken Arrow in the semifinals, a team that quite frankly they’ve owned.

Broken Arrow Beats Mustang 43-20

The Tigers traveled to the west to take on Mustang.  The only 6A quarterfinal that was played on Friday night took place on a sleet covered field in Mustang.  The Tigers heated things up quickly with Devon Thomas taking the opening kick back for a TD.  Face rival Union for a spot in the title game.

Jenks Beats Midwest City 33-14

The Trojans used a pick 6 from Dylan Harding to spark a 19 point win over the Bombers to advance to their 8th straight semifinal appearance.  The Trojans will see a Westmoore team that they shutout in week 7 24-0.  The defending champs held the Jags to under 100 yards of total offense.

Westmoore Beats Lawton 28-15

The Jags beat Lawton in dominating fashion on Saturday afternoon.  Westmoore jumped out to a 28-0 lead and Lawton didn’t score until late in the 3rd quarter.  Westmoore becomes the only hope that the West has at winning a 6A title.  They get the defending champion Jenks Trojans in the semifinals.

Class 5A

Lawton MacArthur Beats Pryor 19-15

The Highlanders got all 19 points in the 2nd half to come back from a 7-0 halftime deficit to advance to the semifinals.  The Tigers struggled offensively getting anything going.  Lawton Mac was held 20 points under their season average but got enough points to come back and end Pryor’s cinderella run.

McAlester Beat Carl Albert 52-13

Nobody in Oklahoma saw this coming.  Nobody.  I think most people knew that McAlester would score points but to drop 52 as easily as they made it look surprised a lot of people.  A dominant performance by McAlester’s defense makes the Buffs the heavy favorite in 5A in my eyes.

Guthrie Beat Shawnee 23-21

The Blue Jays got a scare from upset minded Shawnee but they were able to remain the only unbeaten in class 5A.  Guthrie played a close game with Shawnee all afternoon but were able to get a stop to advance to face a Collinsville team that is very comfortable playing close games.

Collinsville Beat Bishop McGuinness 36-35

Bishop McGuinness had been red hot with back to back impressive wins over Deer Creek and Ardmore.  Collinsville trailed 35-28 with under 1:30 to play.  The Cardinals score on a 75 yard TD and decide to go for 2 and the win and got it.  Now the Cards get the undefeated Guthrie Blue Jays.

Class 4A

Anadarko Beat Catoosa 40-14

The Warriors were just too much for Catoosa on Friday night.  The Warriors remained undefeated and improved to 52-2 since the start of the 2010 season.  Can anybody stop this team?  Only 2 teams have, Clinton last year in the title game and Metro Christian in 2010’s 3A quarterfinals.

Wagoner Beat Woodward 28-21

What else can we say about Wagoner RB Lawrence Evitt?  In each of Wagoner’s 2 playoff games this year, Evitt has gone for over 300 yards.  They’ll need that a 3rd straight week when they face Anadarko in the semi’s for a 2nd consecutive year.  Anadarko beat Wagoner by 10 last season.

Douglass Beat Oologah 29-25

Oologah had been playing their best football, Douglass trailed in their 1st round game as late as the 3rd quarter.  It looked like Oologah had a legitimate shot to get to the semi’s.  Douglass stopped all that when they ran in the game winning touchdown with 33 seconds left to get the close win.

Poteau Beat Clinton 10-7

Poteau continued their unprecedented season by beating the defending champs 10-7 with a game winning field goal with 6 seconds left in the game.  The Pirates now advance to face Deondre Clark and the Douglass Trojans with a spot in the state championship game on the line.

Class 3A

Blanchard Beat Newcastle 41-0

The defending champs rolled again to another playoff win.  Blanchard’s 41-0 win wasn’t near as close as their 28-7 win over Newcastle back on September 20th.  The Lions move on to the quarterfinals to face upset minded Lincoln Christian.

Lincoln Christian Beat Victory Christian in OT 27-26

The previously undefeated Conquerors fell behind Lincoln Christian 20-7 at halftime.  Victory Christian climbed back in the game and tied it at 20 to send it to overtime.  Victory went for 2 and the win and came up short giving Lincoln a huge program win in 3A.  Defending champs up next.

Plainview Beats Tuttle 14-6

What’s up with Plainview when they play Tuttle?  Plainview’s average margin of victory when they don’t play Tuttle this season is 43 points per game.  In the two games this season these two teams met, Plainview won both by a COMBINED 13 points.  Doesn’t get easier, undefeated Locust Grove next.

Locust Grove Beats Berryhill 30-8

Last week I said if Locust Grove comes out and dominates like they have all season they’d make a believer out of me.  Mission accomplished.  The Pirates won by 22 and Berryhill didn’t score until Locust Grove was up 30-0.  The Pirates travel to unbeaten Plainview in a huge quarterfinal game.

Hilldale Beats Metro Christian 14-12

Wow.  Maybe the upset of the playoffs so far.  Metro Christian had dominated all season long and had a let down to end their season.  The Patriots defense kept them in the game but Metro’s offense never got going and Hilldale stopped a 2 point conversion with under 2 minutes to go to seal the win.

Seminole Beats Heritage Hall 52-27

PAPI WHITE.  Any questions?  Last week the Chieftain broke the Oklahoma playoff record for most rushing yards in a game with over 460.  What does he do for an encore?  Goes for over 350 against Heritage Hall.  For those who didn’t major in math, that’s over 800 yards in 2 games.  Beast.

Beggs Beats Checotah 34-28

The Beggs Demons continue their unlikely run in the 3A playoffs by knocking off Checotah on Saturday night.  I’m one of the skeptics that didn’t think Beggs could make it this far.  In fact, I had them losing in the 1st round.  Winning in the quarterfinals will be very tough as they face Kingfisher.

Kingfisher Beats Jones 48-0

How dominant has Kingfisher been?  The closest game they played this year was a 34-7 win over Marlow.  A 27 point win for the hungry Yellowjackets.  So far Kingfisher has beaten their first two playoff opponents by a score of 100-9.  Good luck Beggs.  Kingfisher looks poised for a title run.

Class 2A

Hennessey Beat Washington 41-7

Vian Beat Salina 41-20

Davis Beat Christian Heritage 34-29

Adair Beat Okemah 21-12

Meeker Beat Nowata 20-14

Millwood Beat Hobart 60-6

Hartshorne Beat Commerce 17-7

OCS Beat Lindsay 38-16
