Not very often that you get 3 match ups in 3 different classes that all could be state title game previews. That’s what we got from a jam packed week 6 in 6A, 5A and 4A. Now comes week 7, the fall break week. Almost all games will be played Thursday instead of Friday this week. No change for us here. We’ll put out the new rankings tomorrow and our top 10 games on Thursday. As always, we’ll be on the radio Saturday morning from 8-10 recapping all the action and bringing you interviews from all over the state. Like I said, we had three match ups that wouldn’t surprise me if we saw them again in December for a gold ball. It’s time to break down not only those games but all the top stories from week 6.
Jenks Handles Broken Arrow In 6A Showdown. Beat Tigers 28-7
This was a game I had circled on my calendar since July. If the Tigers were going to be taken seriously as state title contenders, they needed to go beat Jenks. Broken Arrow came up short, and while I still think they’re contenders, it’s apparent now that Jenks and Union are still the favorites. BA out gained Jenks 301-254, but costly turnovers provided the difference in this 6A-2 clash. The Trojans now have to avoid a hangover as they go on the road to take on an undefeated Westmoore team Friday night.
Bixby Wins A Potential Elimination Game. Beat Sapulpa 34-24
The Spartans have been killed by turnovers in the two games leading up to Friday night. In losses to Westmoore and Broken Arrow, Bixby turned it over 9 times combined. Bixby avoided the turnover bug and won a huge game against a Sapulpa team that will be right there for the last playoff spot in 6A-2. Obviously we have 4 weeks left and a lot can happen. Bixby has put itself in position to make the 6A playoffs for the third time in four years. Muskogee and Edison still have some say in this playoff race, but don’t be surprised if we look back at this game as the decider in the 4th playoff team out of this district.
Putnam City North Upsets Bombers. Beat Midwest City 21-20 In OT
“Bomber Magic” might not be back after all. Midwest City was upset by PC North in shocking fashion on Thursday. This is a Panther team that has struggled. Midwest City will now have to fight a little bit harder to secure a spot in the playoffs after this loss, and a loss to Norman North. Midwest City needs to bounce back and have a strong showing against Lawton Eisenhower this week. The Bombers still have Yukon and Edmond North on the schedule. After the loss to PC North, you can’t mark those down as wins just yet.
Lawton Makes A Statement. Beats Southmoore 50-13
Alright Lawton, I see you. Last week I wasn’t sure about the Wolverines after they got wins over Edmond Memorial and Choctaw but didn’t look impressive doing it. What do they do? Go on the road and dismantle a decent Southmoore team. This sets up a huge clash with Edmond Santa Fe on Friday night. Lawton gets the Wolves at home and if they can contain OU commit Justice Hansen, they should get the win. That is definitely easier said then done.
Guthrie Wins Showdown With Defending Champs. Beat Carl Albert 28-21
Look very closely at this game ladies and gentlemen. We might be seeing it again in December at Boone Pickens Stadium. The Blue Jays had not been tested going into this game. The closest game was a 20 point win against Enid. Yeah, okay, that’s a nice win I guess but it’s not Carl Albert. Guthrie stepped up and got the impressive win stopping Stevie Thompson in the fourth quarter which, without a doubt, is very impressive. Guthrie also made a comeback without arguably their best player Kai Callans. Guthrie still has showdowns with Bishop McGuinness and Deer Creek. However, it looks like the Blue Jays are on their way to a 10-0 regular season.
Poteau Remains Undefeated. Beat Fort Gibson 42-28
What in the world is going on in district 4A-4?!? Cascia Hall lost a district game. Broken Bow has fallen and it doesn’t appear they’re getting up anytime soon. Poteau is undefeated and just won a road game at Fort Gibson in convincing fashion. If you had all of this happening before the season I’ll tip my cap to you. Poteau had quietly won week after week. Finally when they went on the road and all eyes were on them they impressed. If the Pirates can get a win this week at home to perennial power Cascia Hall, maybe it’s time we start talking about Poteau as a contender in 4A.
Anadarko Routs Clinton In 4A Title Game Rematch. Beat Red Tornadoes 35-7
Similar to Guthrie, Anadarko had not been tested going into this match up with the #1 team and defending champ. It didn’t matter. I know, Marquiz Simpkins left the game with an injury. However, Anadarko wasn’t at full strength either. I also know that Anadarko won the regular season meeting last year and we know how that turned out. They didn’t win by 28 points though. This was an eye opening win for the Warriors. Don’t be surprised when the rankings come out tomorrow that you don’t see Darko on top.
Come back tomorrow for the release of the new top 10 for 2A-6A.
