Week 2 Recap

Rivalry games brought out the best week 2 had to offer.  All over the state rivals went to battle and we had some entertaining finishes.  I’ll be introducing something new this week to our weekly recap.  In each class I breakdown, I’ll include something called “Westside Love”.  This is to keep track of what’s going over on the Westside of the state.

Class 6A

Jenks Does It To Union Again.  Trojans Win 20-16
Can lightning strike 9 times?  It is unbelievable how often these two titans not only play competitive games, but go down to the wire and require heroics like we saw Friday night.  It’s hard to describe this rivalry to people who aren’t familiar with it.  In fact, the only explanation you can give is “it’s the backyard bowl”.  It doesn’t matter who the better team is (Jenks).  It doesn’t matter if one team is playing with a backup quarterback and a 3rd string running back (Union).  When these two teams get on the field, expect the unexpected.

Friday night was no different.  Dylan Harding, who is an Oklahoma State commit at safety, has to play both ways this season.  In fact, Harding hurt his shoulder and missed last week of practice and didn’t get much time on offense Friday night, until it mattered most.  Harding had tweeted earlier in the day, “I wanna make a play like Kejuan”.  Harding was referring to Kejuan Jones who raced 80 yards with under a minute to play in the 2000 Jenks-Union match up to give Jenks the win.

Creepy.  Several hours later, fighting pain in his shoulder that kept him from being able to raise his arm up in the air, Harding got his chance.  After begging coaches to be put in the game, Harding was put in with an opportunity.  Jenks was left for dead, Union had the game won.  Except for one problem, it’s the backyard bowl.  With 25 seconds left, Cooper Nunley found Harding all by himself behind Union defenders for a 76 yard touchdown.  The Trojans got another one on their rival.  What else can be said about this rivalry?  It’s the backyard bowl.

Broken Arrow Goes To Arkansas And Beats Bentonville 24-17
The Tigers went to NW Arkansas and walked out with a 7 point victory over the top team over in Arkansas.  Bentonville is also nationally ranked according to some publications so without a doubt it’s a great victory for the Tigers from Oklahoma.  Broken Arrow needed some trickery to get the win.  Hunter Copelin caught a 27 yard touchdown off a double pass late in the fourth quarter.

This win is very impressive because it was done virtually without their workhorse at running back.  Oklahoma State commit Devon Thomas left the game after just 4 plays into the game.  It appears that Thomas will be okay for Broken Arrow’s showdown with rival Union on Friday night.  The Tigers got a little revenge for last season’s 20-10 loss to Bentonville at home.

Booker T Washington Stuns McAlester 47-45
Boy was I wrong.  I said that Booker T Washington shouldn’t try to get into a shootout with McAlester because they don’t have the offense to keep up with the Buffaloes high powered attack.  Oops!  Not only did Booker T Washington keep up offensively, they did it coming from behind.

McAlester jumped out to a 38-17 halftime lead.  It looked like the Buffs would stroll to their second straight victory over a 6A team.  At halftime I felt pretty good about my prediction.  However they usually play a second half after halftime, and the Hornets took full advantage.  Led by the passing and running of Cordale Grundy, Booker T escaped McAlester with a 2 point win.  Grundy finished with 271 yards passing and 67 yards rushing.  The Hornet QB also got into the end zone 3 times on the ground and twice in the air.

Edison Grabs Attention, Beats Rival Memorial 34-19
The Eagles had an impressive showing in a preseason scrimmage against East Central in the All City preview several weeks ago.  That was just the beginning.  Edison really dominated their midtown rival on Friday night.  The Eagles ended up with over 300 yards rushing in the victory over the Chargers.  Edison is now 2-0 early on in the 2013 season, they were 1-19 over the last two seasons.  This is the first season since 2005 that Edison has started the season 2-0.

Westside Love

Lawton Handles Rival Lawton MacArthur 47-20
This is a solid Lawton team.  I believe that the winner of the Lawton-Edmond Santa Fe game will be the “best of the west” in regards to the west’s best shot at winning 6A.  The Wolverines jumped all over a very good Highlander team on Friday night.  I’m aware that Lawton Mac is a 5A team, however it’s a great 5A team.  Lawton will get tougher tests when they jump into district play but a 27 point win over Lawton Mac is very impressive.

Midwest City Holds Off Stillwater Comeback Winning 28-22
We’ve mentioned it before, Midwest City is trying to get back to legitimacy after dropping off a rare 3-7 season last year.  Midwest City got another close, but impressive victory over Stillwater Friday night.  The Bombers led 28-6 at halftime and the Pioneers got back into the game but the 22 point deficit was too much to overcome.  I’m still a little hesitant about saying “Bomber Magic” is back.  Edmond Santa Fe was without OU commit Justice Hansen and Stillwater is a borderline playoff team.  We’ll know more this week about whether MWC is back when they face rival Del City.

Norman North Comes Back And Beats Del City 41-38
Speaking of Midwest City-Del City, the Eagles were explosive against last year’s 6A runner up.  Norman North trailed 38-33 going into the fourth quarter.  The Timberwolves got a good win after losing their opener to rival Norman in week 1.  Del City looks like a team in 5A that is hungry after last year’s 1st round loss to Carl Albert.  The Eagles put up 550 yards of total offense on Norman North.  Norman North now focuses on another top 10 opponent, this one in their own class, Westmoore.

Westmoore Beats Southmoore 31-13
This is a good Jaguar team.  Don’t forget, this is the Westmoore team that put a serious scare into Union in the first round of the playoffs last year.  Southmoore was coming off a huge week 1 victory over defending 5A champion Carl Albert and the Jags beat them down.  Westmoore will now take on Norman North and they could be dangerous going into district play if they get a win over the T’Wolves.  Why should east side fans care?  Westmoore is one of the western teams that are in 6A-2 with Broken Arrow, Bixby, Edison, Jenks, Muskogee and Sapulpa.  Not saying Westmoore will overthrow Jenks or BA.  I’m just saying, keep tabs on the Jags.

Class 5A

Bishop Kelley Takes The Bishop Battle 25-22
Seriously, if Bishop McGuinness is going to do anything this year, they HAVE GOT TO STOP TURNING THE BALL OVER.  5 turnovers led to the 3 point loss to the rival Comets in Tulsa Friday.  Bishop Kelley took advantage and got a couple turnovers late in the fourth quarter to secure their first win over McGuinness since 2009.  McGuinness beat Kelley twice last year, once in the regular season, once in the playoffs.  It’ll be interesting to see if these two rivals face off in the playoffs and if the Irish will fix their turnover troubles.

Westside Love

Edmond Deer Creek Handles Shawnee 41-21
The Antlers are the real deal this season.  Shawnee was coming off an impressive upset victory over Bishop McGuinness in week 1 and Edmond Deer Creek ended any chance the Wolves would get a second straight big win.  Edmond Deer Creek jumped out to a 31-0 lead and never looked back.  This is an Antler team that actually won that gauntlet of a district with Carl Albert, Bishop McGuinness and Guthrie last season.  We’ll see how each team plays in district.

Class 4A

Cascia Hall Gets A 10 Point Win Over Glenpool 24-14
Going into the season I had this game circled on my calendar because it was very intriguing to me.  It was possible that both Glenpool and Cascia Hall wouldn’t be legitimate contenders this season in 4A.  The jury is still out on Glenpool.  The Commandoes made a statement in their first two weeks.  They beat rival Holland Hall in week 1 and then took advantage of turnovers last Thursday to beat Glenpool.

Catoosa Bounces Back Beating Collinsville 21-14
One thing was certain, it couldn’t get any worse.  The Indians were shutout and had 6 turnovers in their opener against Pryor.  Catoosa had a nice showing against 5A’s Collinsville on Friday night.  Turnovers gave Catoosa no shot to be competitive against Pryor but it was turnovers that helped them pull off the victory against Collinsville.  The Indians now focus on another 4A top ten team in Fort Gibson.  Catoosa will have to go on the road and it will be a hostile environment.  That will be one of the top games of the week.

Fort Gibson Wins Rivalry Thriller Over Hilldale 17-10
It’s always exciting to get a win over a rival.  It’s even better when you get a win in the last minute over a rival.  That’s exactly what Fort Gibson did to rival Hilldale on Friday night.  The Tigers are 2-0 but I expected more out of them in the first two weeks.  Week 3 will give us a good gauge of how serious of a contender Fort Gibson is when they welcome Catoosa to wrap up non district play.  The Tigers will want to impress this Friday as fellow district mates Cascia Hall and Broken Bow are waiting for their chance to take on the Tigers.

Westside Love

Clinton Beats Down Heritage Hall 39-6
It’s no secret that Clinton is better team with Marquiz Simpkins.  They proved that against one of the better teams in 3A on Friday night.  The Red Tornadoes ran all over Heritage Hall to bounce back off a loss to Lawton MacArthur in week 1.  When I say ran all over, I mean they ran up and down the field and could not be stopped.  Clinton wracked up over 450 yards on the ground and Simpkins went for over 200 yards by himself.  Clinton looks strong but Simpkins will need to stay healthy

National Rankings Update
I would like to preface this by saying I put ZERO STOCK in national rankings.  I know other people feel differently so I looked into it to see how some of our state teams rank amongst some of the top teams in the nation.  I also include some out of state opponents that have played our instate schools.  The 3 national rankings I use are Rivals, Maxpreps and USA Today.

Rivals Top 100
3) DeSoto, TX-Beat Union 44-20, also beat Euless Trinity 61-35
24) Jenks-First two wins this year have come over top 100 teams.
92) Euless Trinity-Two losses coming to top 25 teams in DeSoto and Jenks
94) Union-Exact same scenario as Trinity.
96) Broken Arrow-I’d have BA higher.  That’s why I put ZERO STOCK in these rankings.
97) Bentonville, AR-The top team in Arkansas but lost to BA Friday.

Maxpreps Top 25
6) DeSoto

USA Today Top 50
20) DeSoto
21) Jenks
